4 Reasons Why Fernando Torres Has Failed At Chelsea

The sensation from Liverpool FC has somewhat faded away and become more of a laughing stock in London, but what’s the reason behind Fernando Torres’ poor form with the Blues?

The Teammates

Andre Villas Boas dismissed claims that Fernando Torres was somewhat intimidated by the antics of Ivorian striker Didier Drogba, Villas-Boas began his Chelsea tenure with Torres as his first-choice striker, but the 27-year-old only began scoring when Drogba was out injured.

The fact is, there is a huge lack of understanding between the other Chelsea FC players and Fernando Torres. There isn’t that one player whom can read the Spaniard’s mind in the London outfit, like what he had with Liverpool FC in Steven Gerrard.

Villas Boas needs a ‘narrow creator’ to accommodate for Fernando Torres. Someone in the center to play ‘in the hole’ for Fernando Torres to feed off. Torres might not have the same speed that he had with Liverpool, but he most certainly knows how to time his runs.

The Formation

Personally, I really don’t think that this is the problem here. Chelsea’s 4-3-3 is very similar to the 4-5-1 formation deployed by Liverpool FC in the Spaniard’s hot streak with the Reds. So this is puzzling as to why Fernando Torres drifts out so much.

As demonstrated against Manchester United. Torres drifted out to right wing to deliver the cross in for Juan Mata’s delicious volley past hapless Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea. Whilst many don’t see the fault in that, the reality is that Mata should be out wide, delivering the crosses, and Fernando Torres is the man whom really should be the one whom puts it in the back of the net.

Perhaps it’s not what’s wrong with the formation, it’s more of the positioning of Fernando Torres in the Chelsea FC attack.

The Mental Block

Big price tag comes big pressure. But you would think that a World Class striker (a few years ago) that Fernando Torres is would be able to cope with expectation. After all, it must be remembered that he did move to Liverpool FC for a fee of around 20 million pounds.

The fact that the media are constantly pestering him about his form doesn’t help him either.

Fitness

Let’s face it. He isn’t the same smiley striker that Liverpool FC once had, continuously putting the ball into the back of the net. He has lost a lot of his acceleration that he had with the Reds in his prime, just around 3 seasons back.

Perhaps it is even fear that his hamstring struggles will strike again that means that the Spaniard is being slightly more cautious when it comes to his game. Yes, he’s been given the rest that he needed quite desperately in the post season before the start of the 2011/12 campaign, but one would think that he knows that his hamstring problems aren’t a thing of the past.
